FOREIGN Minister Saifuddin Abdullah has extended condolences on behalf of the government and people of Malaysia to the government and people of Japan over the demise of Japan’s former prime minister Shinzo Abe, who was shot by a gunman today.

“On behalf of the government and the people of Malaysia, I would like to express profound condolences to the government and people of Japan, and the family of the former prime minister of Japan, Shinzo Abe,” he said in a statement today.

Saifuddin said Abe was an iconic leader and he will always be remembered for his contributions to the economic development of Japan through “Abenomics”.

“He had also contributed significantly to Malaysia’s Look East Policy, where most recently, he represented the Japanese government as the special envoy of the prime minister of Japan to commemorate the policy’s 40th anniversary in Kuala Lumpur,” he said.

Abe served two terms as prime minister – first in 2006 and then again from 2012-2020. He also became Japan’s longest-serving head of government.

As prime minister, Abe visited Malaysia three times and played a key role in advancing and diversifying bilateral relations with Malaysia, Saifuddin said.

“Abe’s legacy and contributions will be treasured and continue to live on,” he said.
